Not enough TRX to cover the network fee? Send your USDT anyway

You want to send USDT on Tron, and the wallet stops you: not enough TRX to cover the network fee. The USDT is there, but on Tron it cannot pay for its own transfer.

Depending on the wallet and its version, messages like these (Trust Wallet, TronLink and other Tron wallets):

Why it happens

USDT on Tron (TRC20) is a smart contract, and every transfer of it costs energy. Without staked or rented energy, the network burns TRX instead: about 6.5 TRX when the recipient already holds USDT, about 13 TRX when it holds none. An address that has only ever received USDT is often not even activated yet. With 0 TRX, the wallet refuses before it sends.

How to fix it

Have about 15 TRX sent to the same address, from an exchange or a friend. Then the wallet pays on its own, and that is usually the cheapest way.

Can I send USDT without TRX at all?
